6 Lies You Shouldn't Tell Your Doctor

a woman waiting at the doctor's office.

By Jeanette Moninger

There isn't a lot your body can hide in one of those crinkly numbers. Maybe that's why so many women refuse to reveal much else at doctor visits. About a third of men and women in the United States admit to lying to their M.D.'s, according to a 2010 survey. But keeping secrets can be dangerous, especially if the information you're withholding leads to a wrong diagnosis. Besides, "a doctor's job is to advocate for your health, not judge," say Gary Fischer, M.D., a general internist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Here's why it's time to tell the whole truth -- and nothing but.

a cigarette

"I never smoke."

The real deal: Jean Thilmany has been lighting up a couple of times a month for the past 20 years. But because the 42-year-old Saint Paul resident doesn't consider herself a smoker, she never mentions it to her doctor. "I don't smoke often enough for it to affect my health," she says. Actually, if you puff even the occasional cigarette at happy hour, your doctor needs to know. Yes, cancer is a concern, but equally important, those smokes affect your circulation and increase your risk for blood clots. Be especially careful if you're on the Pill. "Estrogen, found in combination birth control pills, the Patch and the NuvaRing, makes blood more prone to clotting," explains Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale School of Medicine.

Your doc can recommend estrogen-free contraceptives, like the progestin-only mini pull, an IUD or the Depo-Provera injection, but only if you're up-front with her. Still on the fence about fessing up? You may not have your habit under control as well as you think: One study found that one in five social smokers eventually starts lighting up daily.

a woman stressed.

"Nothing has changed since my last visit."

The real deal: Really? When your doctor asks "What's new?" she doesn't mean only medically. Whether you're in a tense relationship or fretting about work woes or money matters, chronic stress can trigger high blood pressure, migraines, tummy troubles and heart palpitations, Dr. Fischer says. "The stress hormone cortisol throws other hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, out of kilter," says Jerilynn Prior, M.D., director of the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research at the University of British Columbia. This does more than mess with your period: Estrogen helps prevent bone loss, and progesterone aids bone growth.

The good news: Although prolonged periods of stress can have serious health consequences, there is a lot you can do. Talk to your physician; she can suggest stress busters, like relaxation exercises and yoga. In some cases she may recommend that you speak to a mental health professional who can help you work through your problems.

pills

"I'm not taking anything."

The real deal: More than 50 percent of Americans take supplements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The few natural remedies that you use may not seem noteworthy to you, but they are to your physicians. "A decade ago many women took Saint-John's-wort for PMS only to learn that it can make birth control pills less effective," says FITNESS advisory board member Mark Moyad, M.D., director of preventive and alternative medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center. And that's not the only interaction your physician wants to watch out for. Using ginseng with antidepressants puts you at risk for serotonin syndrome, a potentially fatal condition that causes diarrhea, fever and seizures. Because fish oil can thin the blood, you should stop taking it a week before dental work or surgery and don't combine it with another blood thinner, like aspirin, without checking with your doctor. Too much vitamin D can cause kidney stones, while too much viamin C can cause heartburn. So make a list of the pills you pop, including vitamins, supplements and meds (OTC and prescription), and bring it with you to your appointment.

"I feel fine."

The real deal: About one in eight women struggle with depression at some time, but recognizing that you need help isn't easy. Twice as many women as men are affected. In addition to having persistent feelings of sadness, guilt, hopelessness and irritability, depressed women may gain or lose weight. "Tell your physician about any significant changes in your mood, thinking or behavior that affect your ability to function at home, at work or with your friends," says David Fassler, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington. She'll probably rule out other potential causes, such as viruses, thyroid disorders and medication side effects, and then conduct a psychological evaluation herself or refer you to a mental health expert. The happy news is that there are many treatment options, including psychotherapy and antidepressants.

"I always use condoms."

The real deal: Your date didn't don his raincoat. It happens -- more often than it should, given all that we know about STDs and unplanned pregnancy. Two-thirds of single Americans occasionally have unsafe sex, according to a 2010 survey from the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University in Bloomington. It's not that we're naïve about the risks. "I know what I should do. It just doesn't always happen," says Anna Sowa, 28, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "I've witnessed friends struggle with repercussions from reckless behavior, but I still don't discuss my sexual indiscretions with my doctor."

Bottom line: Your doc needs to know if you've had unprotected sex, multiple partners, or STDs in the past. If you're too embarrassed to speak up, Dr. Minkin suggests jotting this info down on your medical history form. "STDs aren't always apparent," Dr. Minkin says. In fact, two of the most common ones, genital human papillomavirus (HPV) and Chlamydia, rarely cause symptoms. Antibiotics clear up Chlamydia, but if you're not tested for the disease and it goes untreated, you could permanently damage your reproductive organs and experience fertility problems and chronic pelvic pain. And while nearly 60 percent of HPV infections go away on their own within six months, certain strains linger and increase your risk for cervical cancer.

a healthy diet

"I eat a healthy diet."

The real deal: After three days of swigging nothing but a concoction of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, Catherine Howe Bryant, 32, felt light-headed, lethargic and, not surprisingly, famished. "I dropped a few pounds, but I felt awful," admits the Winston-Salem resident. Still, Bryant does a liquid cleanse whenever she wants to "feel better" about her body. She's never told her doctor. What she and other women don't realize is that extreme diets can do real damage. "When your body doesn't get the protein it needs to generate new cells and tissue, it starts to burn muscle tissue, including the heart's cardiac muscle," says Arthur Frank, M.D., medical director of the George Washington University Weight Management Program in Washington, D.C. This can lead to heart palpitations, arrhythmias and many other cardiac problems. Putting yourself into starvation mode slows your metabolism in the short term and ultimately makes it difficult to maintain weight loss.

Whether you're trying to slim down for a beach vacay or training for a race, clue your doc in. She can help you devise a sensible plan and refer you to a nutritionist for a dietary tune-up that's safer than a detox or cleanse.

One Guard Dead After Vybz Kartel Reportedly Starts Riot And Breaks Out Of Prison In Jamaica??

Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, allegedly started a riot at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre, where he was being held whilst under investigation over his possible involvement in up to seven murders.

It is reported that Kartel and several other prisoners managed to take control of the prison shortly after 1am local time this morning (30/11/11), taking clothes and keys from guards before escaping in a prison maintenance pickup truck at approximately 1.45am.

One police officer is thought to have died of a heart attack during the escape with at least twelve others injured, including two who were shot with guns apparently smuggled into the prison ahead of the raid.

The Force Commissioner of Jamaica’s Criminal Investigations Branch has confirmed that Kartel, who has previously worked with the likes of Eminem, Jay-Z and Akon, is on the run and that he and the other escapees are now on the island’s most wanted list.

Here’s the catch though, according to the Jamaica Observer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green is saying this is just a rumor.

“I know nothing about that. If that had taken place I would would certainly have known,” Green said.

Police at Denham Town Police station, the closest police station to the remand centre were also unaware of the reports as was the Constabulary Communication Network who also claimed ignorance of any jail break.

“It may be an attempt by his cronies to keep him in the news but they don’t need to spread rumours to do that because he will be in the news for quite some time,” one cop told the Observer.

Kris And Bruce Jenner Are Headed For Splitsville…

The ENQUIRER has learned that the 20-year union of reality TV’s most famous mom and pop – former Olympian Bruce and manager/show producer Kris – is on the rocks and both of them are ready to throw in the towel.

They’ve been battling over everything from money to how to raise their offspring.

Bruce is tired of Kris making work her priority instead of family, and Kris can’t stand Bruce spending time and money on his expensive hobbies like golf and motorcycle riding, say sources.

The couple is even taking sides in daughter Kim’s explosive divorce battle with her estranged husband.

Incredibly, Kris, 56, has reportedly demeaned her sports hero husband by putting him on an allowance, and an insider reveals that the glamorous family has now become “totally fractured.”

“Bruce and Kris have reached the biggest impasse in their marriage yet,” declared a close source.
One problem is that former Olympic champion Jenner – who’s been married three times – has a chameleon-like personality, say sources. He is kind, caring and considerate early in his marriages, but eventually his personality changes.

In 1972, Bruce wed his college sweetheart Chrystie Crownover, and at first they seemed like a golden couple. But their once-fairytale marriage blew up in 1980.

“Bruce changed,” said the close source. “He was always on the road, concentrating on sports marketing, public speaking and a variety of hobbies, including car racing.

“He played the star on the Wheaties box to the hilt and ran away from family life, becoming an absentee husband and father. In fact, he split with Chrystie while she was pregnant with their second child.”

Bruce began dating second wife Linda Thompson – Elvis’ former girlfriend – in 1980 while still married to Chrystie.

“Linda loved his charismatic, golden-boy image, and they had a blast going out together,” said the source.

But the marriage – which lasted from 1981 to 1985 and produced two sons, Brandon, 30, and reality star Brody, 28 – crumbled when the super-athlete once again made little time for his wife and kids, said the source.

“Just like in his first union, Bruce changed,” the source noted. “He was consumed with traveling and promoting and was no longer attentive.”

An exasperated Linda described their union as “a great relationship – but not a marriage.”
Repeating his pattern, “Bruce is now changing with Kris,” observed the source.

Ironically, the change may have been triggered by Kris’ astute management of the family’s careers and their hit reality show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”

It’s given Bruce the time and luxury to immerse himself in work, golf and even flying toy helicopters. Bruce is the sweetest guy in the world but isn’t as laid back as he was in the beginning of his marriage to Kris.

“Bruce has started standing up for himself, insists Kris cut back on her work and is spending more time away from the house to enjoy time by himself,” charged the source.

“He now wants a life away from the TV craziness. As a result, he and Kris are at a crisis point in their marriage.

“He loved being a team with her in the early days of their marriage, but there seems little hope for reviving that between his outside interests and her managing and running the Kardashian empire 24-7.

“They are at a breaking point in the relationship.”

Wale & Rick Ross Are The Feature On The Upcoming Issue Of Billboard Magazine

The Maybach Music boys are the feature of the upcoming issue of Billboard magazine. After a good start by Wale and an upcoming much awaited LP from CEO Rick Ross, the MMG is making headlines everywhere. Here's their quotes:

RICK ROSS QUOTES

On his health:

One month later, Ross says that he “feels great,” and although rumors abound about his physical state, he chalks up the scares to a “lack of sleep.”

“It could have been a lot worse,” Ross adds of the health scare. “So I’m just thankful. I feel good—and I’m back on my grind already.”

About his new album, “God Forgives, I Don’t”:

“This album is almost like a movie,” Ross says. “I wanted [the title] to be something that was extremely emotional, to set up a real roller coaster ride as far as the music and thought process. It sounds like a term of retaliation, and with the picture that I’m painting, it felt perfect.”

On Maybach’s business model:

“I’ve most definitely been a fan of Hov and his whole movement,” Ross says of Jay-Z. “He gave a blueprint to a lot of young entrepreneurs, as well as Wayne, with how active Wayne is with artists. There’s a lot of different approaches, but at the end of the day, we’ve . . . just got to be hands-on and walk our own path.”

On having faith in Wale’s talent despite poor album sales:

Ross says that he could see the passion in Wale’s rhymes, and the poor sales of Attention Deficit didn’t deter him from offering Wale a deal. “It wasn’t about hype, and it wasn’t about past success,” Ross says. “It was about who Wale was as an MC—an incredible MC—that made me a fan. I felt we could make history together.”

WALE

On the success of “Ambition”:

“It’s not surprising,” Wale ways coolly of the victory. “I knew I could do it.”

On label boss Rick Ross:

“I was on his radar,” Wale says. “Ross had the vision from the start.”

On getting good advice from Jay-Z:

“Jay-Z, essentially, is my business adviser,” Wale says. “Him, Rich and [Roc Nation’s] John Meneilly. I know Jay has a personal place in his heart for Ambition. I remember one time I was on the phone with Jay, asking him, ‘What did I do [wrong]? What can I do differently?’ He was like, ‘Maybe you just didn’t come with that single. You made a solid first album. But you didn’t come up with that single.’ That just added fuel to my fire.”

His take on rap music:

“[Rappers] used to take pride in being the best or becoming the best. Now they just talk about who has the most swag. But who wants to be the best?” he asks. Wale really wants to know. “Come to the table with your albums. I nailed it this time. I’ll keep busting my ass until . . . you’re going to have to respect me. I love hip-hop so much, and I’m really a humble dude. We’re all cocky inside our records—because that’s how rap is.”

Dawn Richard's "December Sky" Promo Pics

Kalenna's not the only one embarking on her solo career. Dawn Richard, one-third singer/songwriter of the Diddy-Dirty Money group, is releasing her first iTunes solo single, "December Sky. And we have her brand new promo pics. Dawn got into the Holiday spirit recently when she released a sweet song about missing loved ones during the Holidays. FRANK OCEAN NAMED GQ’S ‘ROOKIE OF THE YEAR’

With a successful mixtape and a sold out international tour, Frank Ocean has been selected as GQ’s Rookie of the Year. The 24-year-old filmed a mini-interview with GQ’s Amos Barshad and talked everything from his hobbies, to why the color orange is favorite color, to what he has learned musically and non-musically from Kanye West and Jay-Z:

“The one non-musical thing that I learned from working with Kanye is that you should always choose your sneakers wisely.” [...] “Musical thing that I learned from Jay-Z, ‘Less takes is sometimes more.’”

Maybach To Be Discontinued

It looks as though Hip Hop may have to find itself a new fancy brand of cars to brag about!

In an unexpected announcement last week, Daimler AG revealed that they will be discontinuing their luxury Maybach vehicles soon due to low sales and lack of profits. Last year, there were reportedly less than 200 Maybachs sold, which carried a starting price of $375,250 — one of which Kanye West and Jay-Z happily chopped and screwed for their music video, ‘Otis.’

To make up for the financial loss, Daimler Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche plans on expanding the company’s now three Mercedes-Benz S-Class model to six in 2013.

“We came to the strong conclusion that the sales chances for the Mercedes brand are much stronger than those for Maybach.”

The luxury vehicles have been the ride of choice for rappers over the years, making appearances in numerous hip hop videos and being the motivation behind the name of Rick Ross’ label, Maybach Music Group. Last year, fans of Diddy’s son Justin Combs were left green with envy when he was presented with a $350,000 Maybach for his 16th birthday during MTV’s Sweet 16 special.

You have to wonder if Hip Hop’s influence had any impact on sales…

Drake: ‘Rihanna Is The Most Iconic Female Right Now – Next To Nicki Minaj’

Google Music caught up with Drizzy a few weeks ago while he was on the promo run for his new album, ‘Take Care’ for an interesting chat. During his intimate sit down, Drake discussed a range of topics including his legacy, staying consistent and his fascination with getting into the minds of females. He also revealed that he believes that Rihanna is the most iconic female out right now, next to his labelmate Nicki Minaj.

Check out a few excerpts and video below:

On being consistent and making quality music
I’m not the guy that would ever be able to make surface music with no substance. I think all my projects, hopefully, I’m working through some form of emotion because I think that’s what music is about. It’s about connecting and people being able to relate.

In five years, I like people to view “Take Care” at that point as another point of consistency. Another over delivery on something people thought I was going to drop the ball on. I think every time I say I’m about to do something people are waiting for me to fumble. That’s probably one of the biggest motivations behind a lot my raps is the amount of people that want me to fall or whatever. I think that should be the motivation for most rappers. The further you climb towards the top, the more hands you have on your pants leg dragging you to the bottom. I wear really strong pants.

On collaborating with Rihanna with the title track “Take Care”
I think my goal was something that moves. I really wanted to bring her into our world but still allow her to be herself. I think she really shines bright. She comes from a place that’s so rich in culture, so rich in music, but being what I feel like, the most iconic female period right now—next to Nicki Minaj, of course… [Nicki is] just doing incredible, she’s my favorite person.

On making music for women
Kendrick Lamar says something on my album that rings so true. “Women are the tastemakers for the music that we make.” Women buy records and women fall in love with music and listen to it when they fall asleep. It moves them and I have this fascination with getting into the minds of women and truly letting them know how I think as a man and letting them know how I view them as women. That should appeal to men as well.

On his legacy
I want people to really feel like I knew Drake while he was on this Earth. I know everything about him. There were no secrets, there was nothing that he hid, no feelings that he concealed. In five years, hopefully I have a couple more projects out that surpass Take Care, but I would like for them to say I remember that moment when I wasn’t sure what was gonna happen and Drake delivered an album that served a purpose in my life.

Hair Loss Linked to Braids and Weaves in New Study – How To Prevent It

A recent study in the Archives of Dermatology found that braids and weaves may contribute to permanent hair loss in African-American women. The report reads: “The resulting prolonged traction [used to create the styles] can produce chronic folliculitis, which can eventually lead to more scarring.”

Almost 60% of 310 women surveyed for the study had central hair loss with scarring. Among those with the most serious hair loss, 57% wore braids and weaves, the study by researchers from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio found. Seen predominately in African-American women, this type of hair loss, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, centers on the vertex (crown) of the scalp and spreads peripherally.

Most women of color wouldn’t be surprised by these statistics as any tight style can break your hair if not done properly. But a woman’s hair is her crowning glory so it’s important to nurture it with optimal care so hair loss and permanent scarring doesn’t become your reality.

Take heed to these tips that will help you achieve longer, stronger and healthier hair:

Give Your Hair a Rest from Tight Braids and Weaves

While you can wear braids and weaves if you’d like, be sure to care for your hair while it is styled, refrain from getting these styles frequently and avoid too-tight braiding and sewing when wearing weaves.

Wash Hair Regularly

It seems like this should be common sense but many women of color don’t wash their hair often enough to avoid messing up their hairstyle. The foundation to healthy hair is clean hair. Women of color should wash and condition their hair a minimum of every 10-12 days, but this can vary depending on your hair type. This is also true when wearing a weave because dirt can cause bacteria to build up, which leads to infection. Be sure all to remove all shampoo and sit under a hooded drier after.

Usher is Slackin On Payments, So Says Tameka

Tameka Raymond — who had 2 kids with Usher during their brief 2 year marriage — filed court papers in Georgia … asking a judge to strip Usher of joint physical custody of their children ASAP.

According to the docs, Tameka claims Usher has repeatedly FAILED to obtain her permission to travel outside the state with the kids … which he’s legally obligated to do.

But there’s more … a lot more.

Tameka also claims Usher is required and has failed to:
– get her approval before hiring nannies
– give her first shot to watch the kids when he’s away for more than 8 hours
– allow her to take the kids for 2-weeks in the summer of 2011
– let her have custody of the kids during Christmas break 2010

Tameka also claims Usher closed her Saks 5th Avenue credit card — which he specifically said he wouldn’t do — and now she can no longer take advantage of the “special benefits” the card offers.

According to the docs, Usher also promised to pay $5k per month so Tameka could hire her own nanny for the kids — but he hasn’t paid in months, and now owes $34,000 worth of payments.

Tameka also claims there has been a “substantial change in [Usher's] income” since they got divorced — and because of his success, she should get even more money for child support.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Wednesday.

Evelyn Lozada Gets A Fat Check To Come Back To Basketball Wives Miami

We should have known that was just a test to see how deeply VH1 and Shaunie were willing to dig into their pockets. And, according to TMZ, Evelyn got the answer she wanted:

Evelyn Lozada was all set to leave “Basketball Wives” and not return for the show’s fourth season — until the show offered her a deal she just couldn’t turn down … which, TMZ has learned, includes her own spin-off show.

As TMZ previously reported, Evelyn had made up her mind that she was done with the show for good after VH1 posted a blog insinuating she cheated on her [future] husband, NFL star Chad Ochocinco.

Once Evelyn let producers know she was out, that’s when we’re told they really made a push to keep her.

According to our sources, her new arrangement with the show has her shooting about half as often (but with a raise) and that she can work around her daughter’s school schedule. We’re also told Evelyn has made it clear … she will not miss any of Chad’s games.

But according to our sources, the final carrot that sealed the deal … was that VH1 promised to spin off Evelyn and Chad into their own show. We’re told that show would document the months leading up to their wedding … but so far no deal to shoot the wedding has been made.

TI Covers Vibe: Defends Tiny, Anti-Gays And Gives Bin Laden’s Death The Side Eye

Vibe magazine chose The King of the South, T.I to cover their year end issue. Inside, he talks about everything from Bin Laden’s death being a hoax, Americans first amendment rights and his belief that the gay community can be sensitive at times. Tip also became a little defensive while addressing the criticism his wife Tiny received for not taking any drug charges, which he served time in prison for. Check out an excerpt below:

On The legitimacy of Osama’s death
If that really happened…. Man, I’m a conspiracy theorist by nature. You can’t experience the federal penal system and not be somewhat skeptical.

T.I. on all Americans having equal rights
Man, I will say this, the funniest joke I ever heard Tracy say during a stand-up was, ‘C’mon man, I think gay people are too sensitive. If you can take a d*ck, you can take a joke.’ [Cracks up laughing.] That sh*t was funny to me. And it’s kind of true.’ While T.I. makes clear that he supports anyone’s sexual preference, he then connects, in his opinion, a current oversensitivity among gay people with a consequential and ironic offense of the First Amendment. “They’re like,‘If you have an opinion against us, we’re gonna shut you down.’ … That’s not American. If you’re gay you should have the right to be gay in peace, and if you’re against it you should have the right to be against it in peace.’

T.I. on people criticizing Tiny for not taking the drug charge
I’ma tell you, 50 Cent and anybody else, we not gonna have no discussion about what my ole lady shoulda, woulda, coulda done for anything as it pertains to me,” begins his rant. “We ain’t gonn’a do that. I’m the only one in my family that’s gonna take a lick when it pertains to the legal system. Since me, none of my other family members have seen a jail cell. Nobody. I’m the last one. The buck stops here. I feel that a person that stands behind [his woman for a criminal charge] is a coward anyway.

I doubt she would have gotten any time
She wasn’t gonna catch it period, ’cause I’m there. That wasn’t even a consideration. Even if she asked me to I would’ve been like, “Nah, you trippin’. “

So you didn’t feel you were more valuable to your family, employees and business partners on the street?
That’s a discussion between me and another man. Not with the mother of my children. Not with the nurturer of my household.

The issue will be available everywhere December 6th.

New Video: Birdman f/ Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne – “Y U Mad”

Baby, Wayne and Nicki give fans a classic Cash Money video complete with scenes featuring money stacks for breakfast, lavish Maybach rides and plenty of swimsuit models in their latest visual for ‘Y U Mad’.

While Birdman keeps it gangster (and steps his wardrobe up) in the video, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj show off their silly personalities. Wayne dorks out in a pair of Wayfarers, a ridiculous backpack and a huge, fuzzy, red hat while Nicki butches it up dressed as the female Weezy. She dons a pair of Adidas Jeremy Scott Panda Bear shoes and crazy blonde dreads but she doesn’t keep the guy gear on for the entire video. She re-ups in a strappy, white bathing suit while in a press conference scene with about 50 golden mics. Through visuals she wants us to know that ‘she’s winning but she’s still bored’ and that’s ‘Y U Mad’.
