Ja Rule is Now State Property

Rapper Ja Rule turned himself in today to begin serving a two-year prison sentence for weapons possession. He will serve his sentence in a federal prison in upstate NY.

In 2007, police in New York pulled over Ja Rule’s Bentley and found a loaded .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol in the car. Ja Rule was eventually convicted for violating his probation by carrying a concealed weapon.

Ja Rule is also looking at a 3-year prison sentence for income tax evasion on more than $3 million in unreported income. Ja Rule’s lawyers hope the 35-year-old can serve both sentences simultaneously.

In the months leading up to his incarceration, Ja Rule, real name Jeffrey Atkins, recorded an album titled Renaissance, and filmed an untitled reality TV series. Despite his conviction, Ja Rule is not a bitter man:

“Laws are laws,” Ja Rule told ‘Good Day New York.’ “There’s nothing I could really do but own up to the situation. You know, I try not to regret anything I do in life, because you go through life and you do things, and you man up to them. You own them.”
