President Rene Preval will not be leaving office anytime soon. The Haitian political leader will remain in office until his nation chooses a new successor for his position. According to the Associated Press, Preval Chief of Staff Frits Longchamp said that the president will remain in Haiti for three months post-term and leave office on May 14. His term was originally scheduled to end this past Moday, but a runoff election to replace Preval will not be held until March 20.
Preval’s hold on the position is due to an emergency law passed in 2010, which allowed him to extend his term after the fatal earthquake in January.
